The three stages of the Internet.
Stage One: People talking to machines.
- Examples of this are downloading files from a FTP site. Once the files are uploaded the machine serves data to the person with no other user interaction required.
Stage Two: People talking to people.
- Examples of this are peer-to-peer, ad-hoc wireless networks, Bit Torrent and Voice over IP. Machines are still used, but focus is find or connect with another person.
Stage Three: Machines talking to machines.
- An example of this is web services. Once these systems are setup people are not needed on a daily basis.
